Very Happy

I bought this rig a couple of years ago, and have worked the world on CW, SSB and Digital modes. I was hesitant to buy it initially, because of its reputation as a "mobile " rig. However, I honestly have to say that I'm very happy using it as my primary rig at home in my shack. At first, I found the internal menu system to be rather daunting. However, I found excellent help within the extended Yaesu community online and on YouTube. Also, I purchased the Ham Radio Deluxe program suite, meaning I can control many of the rig's settings with a click of the mouse on my computer. My 891 now has the feel of a more expensive rig at a very affordable price. I heartily recommend this rig. You simply cannot get any better value for your money.

Awesome Radio

This is a strange one as Yaesu did not put the vhf/uhf bands on this. Well, here's the thing - Yaesu wanted a kick ass Hf mobile radio that has the latest DSP chips, some advanced CW features and even a speech compressor and simple bandscope (it actually works ok) for those wanting to work HF mobile. However, this is an awesome QRP and field radio as it can go on from 5 watts to 100 watts easily. It does draw 1 amp not 2 A. I have made hundreds of contacts with this rig as a base, mobile and field radio. I would use a dipole to avoid the external tuner if not get the LDG brand but I use an inverted V dipole or a 9:1 antenna. I get excellent audio reports and they think I am on a bigger 991 or ftd3000. I got extra brackets and have a Pelican Box this fits into and I can just grab and go with a lightweight MFJ power supply and be up at Wasaga beach working DX on the picnic table with a dipole hanging off the trees.
